Because of the tough environment, the attachment method for the transponder (or "chip") to the plastic bin needs to be very secure. Modern bins have a special socket, or "chipnest" molded under the edge of the wheelie bin where the RFID transponder or chip can be plugged in. To use the chipnest, the bin is normally turned upside down before the RFID tag is dropped in and then the plug driven in to secure the tag.

There are millions of bins without the modern chipnest. BinChip is a method of securely attaching an economical RFID transponder chip, in the form of a nailtag, to the older wheelie bins, without having to turn them upside down. In fact, a stack of bins does not even have to be unpacked before inserting the RFID chip tags

Bins are stacked in a warehouse, lids fitted - this is the ideal situation/place to fit RFID tags. Under a roof, out of the weather. The use of the standard chipnest will require the bins to be separated first, this is very labour intensive. With BinChip, the bins do not need to be separated first.
